Stupid Dog

Sometimes I’m the stupid dog
chasing its tail,
running in circles
trying to catch the thing
that’s already mine.

Fighting with a phantom foe, forgetting we are one;
that there’s no need to try so hard
to prove my worth,
to fight with ghosts,
to beg for attention from the one I love most.

I’ll try to listen,
I’ll be a good girl,
I’ll put this chase to rest.

I blame the tail.
