What the Body Knows
There are things the body knows
that the mind cannot.
It knows what my dreams mean,
and when I’ve failed,
and all about the laws of gravity.
It knows the secret of your embrace;
that warm, heavy weight that seems to cover every inch of my existence
and swallow me in.
My body knows you like my mind does not;
the deep crevices in your chest, more familiar than those of your soul.
Every scent,
every shudder,
every stroke of your fingertips,
all more familiar than the eternally complex timeline of your mind,
and how every moment of your history in this lifetime
equals who you’ve become, up to this very breath.
Our minds, ever resistant and question-filled,
ever analytical and practical,
they will catch up eventually.
When the body says yes,
the mind has no say in the matter.
My body knows,
always knows before I do,
the familiar embrace of the one
who is meant to hold it.
